AToM: An Analogical Theory of Mind
نویسنده
چکیده
Theory of Mind (ToM) has been well studied in psychology. It is what gives adults the ability to predict other people’s beliefs, desires, and related actions. When ToM is not yet developed, as in young children, social interaction is difficult. A cognitive system that interacts with humans on a regular basis would benefit from having a ToM. In this extended abstract, I propose a computational model of ToM, Analogical Theory of Mind (AToM), based on Bach’s [2012, 2014] theoretical Structure-Mapping model of ToM. Completed work demonstrates the plausibility of AToM. Future steps include a full implementation and test of AToM.

Analogical Cognition: Applications in Epistemology and the Philosophy of Mind and Language
Analogical cognition refers to the ability to detect, process, and learn from relational similarities. The study of analogical and similarity cognition is widely considered one of the ‘success stories’ of cognitive science, exhibiting convergence across many disciplines on foundational questions. Given the centrality of analogy to mind and knowledge, it would benefit philosophers investigating ...
متن کاملThe analogical mind.
The use of analogy in human thinking is examined from the perspective of a multiconstraint theory, which postulates 3 basic types of constraints: similarity, structure, and purpose. The operation of these constraints is apparent in laboratory experiments on analogy and in naturalistic settings, including politics, psychotherapy, and scientific research. The multiconstraint theory has been imple...
متن کاملLogical, analogical, and psychological reasoning in autism: A test of the Cosmides theory
An important regulatory process in the development of behavior is cognition. However, cognition as a blanket term is far too broad to be useful. Rather, specific types of cognition need to be examined separately. One proposal is that one type of human reasoning evolved in a social context, to solve social problems. Here, we report two experiments that use autism to test a prediction from that t...
متن کاملAnalogical Reasoning in the Classroom: Insights From Cognitive Science
Applying knowledge from one context to another is a notoriously difficult problem, both for children and adults, but lies at the heart of educational endeavors. Analogical reasoning is a cognitive underpinning of the ability to notice and draw similarities across contexts. Reasoning by analogy is especially challenging for students, who must transfer in the context-rich and often high-pressure ...
متن کاملPartially Isomorphic Generalization and Analogical Reasoning
Analogical reasoning is carried out based on an analogy which gives a similarity between a base domain and a target domain. Thus, the analogy plays an important role in analogical reasoning. However, computing such an analogy leads to a combinatorial explosion. This paper introduces partially isomorphic generalizations of atoms and rules which make it possible to carry out analogical reasoning ...
